The Drakenstein Veterinary Clinic houses the Wemmershoek Diagnostic Laboratory which is directed by Dr. Leonard Flemming. The laboratory is staffed by qualified medical technologists who have an extensive knowledge of blood-related testing including haematology, serum biochemistry and microbiology. We are committed to providing a repeatable and reputable service at all times.

The laboratory contains an IDEXX ProCyte haematology analyser, IDEXX Catalyst Dx blood chemistry analyser and an IDEXX VetStat blood gas analyser for in-house blood analysis. A biological safety cabinet is used to handle infectious material, and several incubators are used to facilitate the culture of bacteria, moulds and yeasts.

The laboratory specialises in aquaculture quality and health management and functions in close collaboration with the Western Cape Trout Association. Sophisticated equipment is available and includes a total gas saturometer as well as an electronic pH and oxygen meter. In addition to routine diagnostic work, the Wemmershoek Diagnostic Laboratory performs complex compound algal analysis and assessment of water nutrient levels in order to promote healthy, sustainable aquatic ecosystems.
