Digital Radiology

The Drakenstein Veterinary Clinic has an in-house radiology suite which is available for both equine and companion animals. Our on-site radiology suite is an integral and necessary resource for hospitalised patients as well as those seen on an outpatient basis in order to provide guidance on the most appropriate imaging study. Services include imaging of body compartments (thorax and abdomen), bones, joints, skull and spine.

In addition to the in-house radiology suite, three portable Eklin digital radiology units are available for use in the ambulatory environment. These units are small, portable and extremely manoeuverable, providing our expert team of veterinarians with immediate access to high-resolution images at remote locations. We can therefore take a radiograph, view the high-resolution image and interpret the image while visiting your horse or companion animal. The digital radiology units are especially useful for pre-purchase examinations.

Ultrasonography

The Drakenstein Veterinary Clinic has two portable and one standing ultrasound units which are available in-house for hospitalised equines and companion animals. Ultrasound is a medical imaging technique for  muscles, internal organs and tendons. It allows our veterinarians to record their size, structure and any pathological lesions.

Obstetric ultrasound is also used to visualise a foetus and monitor pregnancy. We extensively employ ultrasound to prognosticate horses with acute abdomen or colic. This ensures that we provide the best possible service to you and your horse by making an accurate diagnsois as fast as possible and thereby allowing us to administer the correct therapeutic intervention in a timely, cost-effective manner.
