Vets & Nurses
Ian is the founder of the Drakenstein Veterinary Centre and the hospital director. He is an accomplished stud vet and has a wealth of experience, from years in the field both locally and abroad.
Andrew is our resident surgeon and routinely performs all manner of equine surgeries including colic operations, arthroscopies, caesarians, fracture repair, upper airway surgery, etc. Andrew qualified in 2002, and has a special interest in equine surgery and lameness.
Donald has been practicing in the area for over 2o years and is well known in the Endurance community. He has a special interest in endurance and equine surgery, and is frequently called upon to operate in our theatres. Donald provides an effective ambulatory service based in Durbanville.
Robin is based at DVC and does stud work in Robertson in the breeding season. He has a special interest in equine medicine, anaesthesiology and reproduction. Robin qualified in 2006 and completed an internship in equine internal medicine at Onderstepoort in 2007. After working in general equine practice in KZN for 2 years, Robin moved to the Western Cape and has been here for 2 years.
Ben has been in mixed practice for 4 years and has been recruited to bolster the Robertson branch of DVC. Ben has a long history of working with, and competing horses, and has a special interest in surgery, lameness and reproduction.
Adi has been in mixed practice for 2 years, and is currently spending the 2011 breeding season at DVC to assist with in-house patient care and neonatal foal ICU, as well as anaesthetic monitoring for surgeries.
Philene is DVC’s intern for 2011. She has a special interest in equine medicine and anaesthetics, and is heavily involved in in-house patient care and neonatal foal ICU.
Pia is the senior intern at DVC, currently completing her second year of training. Pia has a special interest in equine medicine, specifically neonatal foal care. Pia recently spent several weeks at the prestigious Hagyard-McGee equine hospital in Kentucky, bringing back much knowledge of how horses are diagnosed and treated in America.
Administrative Staff
Michelle is our veterinary nurse, and has been with DVC for 2 years. Michelle is responsible for the smooth running of the hospital and theatres, as well as in-house patient care.
Melandie is the stable manager at DVC. She has significant experience working on stud farms in our country as well as in Australia and the United States.
Jane works with the accounts in our admin department. She has been a dedicated member of the team since its inception in 2006.
Alexander qualified with a BComm (Actuarial Science) degree and has a solid background in IT and financial management. He has 7 years experience in veterinary practice management and we are very fortunate to have him on board.
Susan has been a dedicated member of the team since its inception in 2006. She has a BCom (Logistics) degree and her field of expertise covers hospital communication, information technology and logistics.
